Why Detroit Pistons Do This Trade
The Detroit Pistons are big winners. They took a gamble on Jerami Grant when they signed him in free agency in 2020. He wanted a chance to prove he can be the focal point of an offense and he accomplished that during his first season with the Pistons.
Now, the Pistons can capitalize on that production in this trade with the Kings. Detroit is getting back Harrison Barnes, who is the exact type of player this roster needs.
With so many young players, Detroit needs some veterans to help guide the way. Barnes is a seasoned veteran with NBA Championship experience. While the Pistons aren’t close yet to being contenders, having someone there to show them how to become that is always a positive.
Jahmi’us Ramsey is another guard that Detroit will have the chance to take a look at and develop. There will be a lot of competition for minutes in the backcourt, but with a new G League team coming this year, the organization will have a chance to see them play in their system.

The draft picks present excellent value as well. Having an unprotected first-round pick from a team that could be lottery-bound is an excellent asset. Detroit could add another highly-rated prospect to the roster in the 2022 NBA Draft, or use that as a trade chip to bring in more established veterans to keep the rebuild moving in the right direction.
The 2022 second-round pick via the Toronto Raptors does the same thing. We saw how valuable second-round picks were during the 2021 NBA Draft when they were used by multiple teams to maneuver around the draft board.

This is an excellent haul in exchange for Grant given where the Pistons are in their rebuild.
