When tuning into a Los Angeles Lakers game for the first time, one might easily mistake LeBron James for an athlete in his prime, and such an observation wouldn’t raise any eyebrows.
The 39-year-old James continues to impress, maintaining averages of 25.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.1 assists in his remarkable 20th season, while also shooting an impressive career-high 41.6 percent from three-point range.
Despite his enduring dominance, a former teammate foresees a reality check for James by the 2024-25 season.
During Monday’s “NBA Today” on ESPN, Danny Green, who faced off against James in the 2013 and 2014 NBA Finals and also teamed up with him in his career, offered insights into why he believes “The King” won’t be able to continue defying the odds indefinitely.
“I think LeBron plays maybe one more year. They [Lakers] can offer him a contract but he’s still going to retire before that contract ends. I give him one more year. He’ll try to play with Bronny….22 years on that body with those miles? It’s coming to an end quickly.”
Even James himself appears to be acknowledging his basketball mortality. Following the Lakers’ victory over the Nets on Sunday night, the iconic forward confessed that he recognizes he doesn’t have “much time left” in his illustrious career.
At present, it remains uncertain whether Bronny James will opt for the 2024 NBA Draft or return to USC for his sophomore year. Should the younger James choose the one-and-done path, the final week of June promises to be a captivating period in the sports world.
This anticipation stems from the fact that the NBA Draft is scheduled for June 26-27, just days before James senior decides on his future with the Lakers or potentially another team.
If we are indeed in the final two seasons of LeBron James’ storied career, all NBA fans, whether you love him or hate him, have to respect the career he has put together.
