For starters, if the Mavericks are making this deal, it’s because they re-signed Irving this summer. In that event, the hardest part of their job has already been done. 

They’ll have two of the best offensive players in the NBA sharing a backcourt. All they’ve got to do then is build around them. This deal is designed to help them do exactly that. 

After all, Johnson is a great 3-and-D wing with some secondary shot creating abilities. This is exactly the type of player that the Mavericks should look to surround their star backcourt with. 

After this trade, the Mavericks will be light on draft capital.
