Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal 

For the Spurs, this will probably depend on the draft. 

If they draft Victor Wembanyama, they probably won’t want to do it. The Spurs will likely feel that they’ve got a quality young core, and want elite complimentary players 

On the other hand, suppose the Spurs slip outside of the top 2 in the upcoming draft. Outside of Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson, there are no sure things in this draft. With that in mind, they may want to make a future-focused deal. 

Why not flip Johnson for a pair of first-round picks? As good as Johnson is, the Spurs may not want to invest serious money in him if they’re as far away from contention as they are.

This deal would hurt in the short-term, but it could help them eventually. Even if that’s hard for their fans to believe in the moment.
