When Kevin Durant requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets hours before the NBA’s moratorium for free agency began, it set the basketball world ablaze. People were shocked that the request came, especially since Kyrie Irving had just opted in to his contract for the 2022-23 season, guaranteeing the duo would be playing together for at least one more season.
The only thing that people are going to find unsurprising are the teams that were reportedly on his list of preferred landing spots. The Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat were the two teams mentioned and both finished first in their respective conferences; the Suns had the best record in the entire NBA.
Despite the request coming three weeks ago, it is something that is still shrouded in some mystery. To this day, no one really knows what prompted Durant to ask for a trade to a new team.
Did he reach his breaking point when it came to Irving not being available to play in games? That was reportedly something that drove James Harden to leave the team barely a year after they had sold the farm to acquire him.
Trying to figure out why this occurred is all guesswork. Durant hasn’t talked to people about it, as players around the league have reached out and he has offered no response. According to Brian Windhorst, even the Nets don’t know what caused this request to be made by Durant.
“Nobody knows what Kevin Durant is thinking right now. His communication with teammates and others in the league has been sparse. I don’t even think that the Nets have a 100% understanding of why Kevin asked for a trade.”
Figuring that out is of the utmost importance for the Nets. If they can get to the bottom of what was irking Durant and try and resolve it, they could start mending the relationship. That could be their best course of action as the trade offers they have received thus far are not to their liking.
LATEST NBA NEWS AND RUMORS: Kevin Durant Trade Market Remains Complex For Brooklyn Nets
With four years remaining on his contract, Brooklyn is in no rush to make a deal. Their asking price is high and rightfully so. Players of Durant’s caliber just don’t normally hit the trade market, especially when you account for his contract being fully guaranteed with zero options or opt-outs.
This is something that will likely drag on throughout the summer as the Nets are going to hold out for the best deal possible. They have time on their side and they are going to make the most of that.
