Why the Trade Benefits the New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans have a young core to build around headlined by Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. While there has been plenty of impressive signs from their top talents, they might not be ready to compete for a few more seasons.
There is still some work to be done from a roster construction standpoint for the Pelicans. Because of this timeline, JJ Redick and Jrue Holiday are not in the plans. In this deal, the Pelicans would acquire the No. 6 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and three future 1st-rounders. That fits right into their plans for the future.
Mike Scott is a capable three-point shooter and Al Horford would provide a stretch-five impact, but this is all about the NBA Draft picks for the Pelicans. Having the contracts in this deal being fitting complementary pieces helps to shoulder the salary cap burden.
The Pelicans will be trading away Holiday this offseason. If they are able to get multiple NBA Draft picks in any deal, it’s an option worth strong consideration.
