Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal
The Washington Wizards realized they were stuck in mediocrity, and decided to make changes. The worst thing that could happen is that they continue to be stuck in mediocrity.
It could happen. This team just acquired Tyus Jones. He’s arguably the best game managing point guard in the NBA. Meanwhile, new Wizard Jordan Poole, for all of his flaws, is a dynamic scorer. Here, the Wizards reunite him with Kuminga.
Following this deal, they’d likely be starting him alongside unpolished rookie Bilal Coulibaly. That sounds like a recipe for long term success – and, just as importantly, short-term failure.
After all, the Wizards need to play the lottery for a few years. By tanking the next couple of seasons and accumulating young talent like Kuminga, the Wizards could build a powerhouse in a few years. It just might not be pretty along the way.

Kuminga has a high level of potential and upside that hasn’t been fully realized due to limited playing time. The Wizards might believe that with more minutes and a larger role, he could develop into a significant contributor or even a star player in the future.
