Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal 

For the Suns, this deal has two justifications. They’re avoiding potential age-related decline from Paul, and they’re getting deeper. 

On the former front, they’re taking a risk. It’s worth noting that Paul has had a significantly better career than either player the Suns are receiving here. If 2022-23 isn’t the year he starts to lose his powers, this could look bad in retrospect. 

At the same time, if the 2021-22 playoffs were any indication, Paul is probably about to lose some powers. Of course, Mike Conley is only a few years younger, but that margin could be significant. Furthermore, he’s not the only player the Suns are landing here. 

In fact, Bogdanovic would instantly become the best wing scorer on this Suns team. They’ll have plenty of quality wings following this deal, but Bogdanovic will have the best shot creation of the bunch.

That could be enough to make up for the loss of Paul – along with the addition of Conley, of course.
