When the New York Knicks signed Jalen Brunson as a free agent during the 2022 NBA offseason, many analysts panned the deal. They believed New York had overpaid for Brunson based on his body of work to that point in his career.

It didn’t take long, but all of those naysayers have been proven wrong. The deal that Brunson signed with the Knicks has proven to be one of the best in recent NBA history as he has greatly outperformed his deal.

In his first two seasons with the Knicks, Brunson has helped turn the franchise around. They have gone from a laughingstock into legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference. He has helped bring the team back to prominence and could be looking to make New York a permanent home.

Steve Popper of Newsday Sports recently made an appearance on The Putback with Ian Begley of SNY.tv. Popper is reporting that he has heard Brunson is open to having discussions about an extension with the team.

NBA NEWS & SCORES: Jalen Brunson & New York Knicks Updates

“I’ve heard whispers that Jalen Brunson would be open to discussions to do [an extension] this summer,” Popper said during the show.

With rumors swirling that the Knicks could be looking to make a huge move during the offseason, working out an extension with their star point guard would be a cherry on top. Brunson deserves a raise for his performance on the court and New York’s ownership and front office should be more than willing to give him one.

Locking in a cornerstone player long-term would also help the Knicks when it comes to recruiting other players to the team. If they know Brunson and possibly Julius Randle will be there long-term, New York will have the chance to be a sustainable winner.

A looming extension for Brunson isn’t the only storyline that the Knicks will be part of during the NBA offseason. OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein are both hitting free agency as well, as the team will have to try and find a way to keep their main contributors and see things through with a hopefully healthy roster during the 2024-25 season.
