Realistically, the Lakers just need players who can complement LeBron Jame and Anthony Davis. If James declines, or Davis can’t bounce back from the last two injury-ridden seasons, they won’t be contending in 2022-23 no matter who they add. 

With that in mind, Paul could be the perfect addition. He’s an elite off-ball threat, and that alone makes life easier on James and Davis. Otherwise, his pick-and-roll acumen and defensive technique should make him valuable in both of those areas even if his athleticism declines. 

Finally, don’t sell the friendship between James and Paul short as a factor either. Chemistry counts. All told, if the Lakers were to acquire Paul, it’s hard to imagine a world where it doesn’t make them both better.
