Sticking with the theme of the game’s evolution, the development of the center position has had widespread effects.

For a while, people thought the big man was a dying breed. They were mistaken. We just saw a 2021-22 season wherein the two leading MVP candidates were centers (Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid).

With that said, the traditional, back-to-the-basket power forward may be forever gone.

As the game has moved towards pace and space, the four spot has become reserved for wings. The modern four is expected to space the floor and defend the perimeter. If they can switch onto bigs, that’s a considerably bonus.

With that said, Patrick Williams has the potential to be the archetypical modern four. Unfortunately, injuries have plagued his young career to date, but his upside remains impressive.
