Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal
Unlike the Chicago Bulls, the Washington Wizards already have rim protection. The younger Daniel Gafford provides an ample amount.
In fact, he’s so good on defense that he’ll threaten Vucevic’s presumptive starting spot next season. In other words, this deal is about Patrick Williams for the Wizards.
Granted, they’ve got a surplus of quality wings already. That’s fine. This trade could be about setting themselves up for another trade as much as anything.
Meanwhile, if healthy, Williams will earn time over Rui Hachimura and Deni Avdija. All three are quality players, but Williams is better. In fact, he’ll even challenge for Kyle Kuzma’s starting position.
If that sounds like a log jam to you, you’re correct. Again, the Wizards would look to consolidate down the road. If they can eventually flip a couple of those wings for a Porzingis-level talent, they’ll have Williams to show for it.

It might be a roundabout way to upgrade, but if it works out, the ends will justify the means.
