First of all, nobody is safe in this player movement era. That goes for both franchises and players. Second of all, the Nets may have been strongarmed into selecting Simmons. James Harden had made his preference to land in Philadelphia known.
Other prospective trade partners may have been scared off. It’s possible that the Nets would have preferred someone else.
That someone else could have been Anthony Davis. In all likelihood, he was never in the cards. However, after the Lakers’ disastrous 2021-22 campaign, they should remain open to all possibilities.

After all, this team in spite of rostering Davis alongside 2 former MVPs, missed the play-in tournament. It was one of the most disappointing regular seasons in recent memory, if not NBA history. Unfortunately, Davis was part of the problem in 2021-22.
Much of which wasn’t his fault. The big man was limited to just 40 games due to injury. It didn’t help that his shooting fell off a cliff, as he hit on 18.6% of his 1.8 three-point attempts per game.
