Why It Makes Sense For The Los Angeles Lakers
Making sense of this deal for the Los Angeles Lakers requires a little more thought. Still, there are valid justifications for it.
Simmons’ fit with Westbrook isn’t questionable. It is quite obviously poor. Even if we assume that the Lakers find a suitor for Westbrook (or buy him out), shouldn’t the Lakers run into the same fit issues between Simmons and LeBron James that plagued them with James and Westbrook in 2021-22?
It’s possible, but it isn’t guaranteed. Westbrook and Simmons have as many differences as they do similarities. Granted, both are primary ball-handlers who don’t provide efficient shooting beyond the arc. With that said, Westbrook fires willingly, whereas Simmons avoids the shot altogether.
For a player that can’t shoot, there’s a tradeoff. Westbrook’s willingness to fire keeps the offense flowing, but it doesn’t keep it humming. Simmons could function as a roll man in pick-and-roll action with James in halfcourt sets, and use his playmaking acumen in transition. Still, this deal might be more about the future for the Los Angeles Lakers.

With LeBron James turning 38 this season, that’s something they’ll have to start thinking about soon. Acquiring the 24-year-old Simmons at least gives them a building block moving forward.
