How This Trade Impacts Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks have surprised a lot of people not necessarily with their record, as they had the pieces to be a good team. Instead, how they are winning is what is surprising people.
For years, Dallas was reliant on an excellent offense to lead them to wins, as their defense lagged behind. This season, they have done a 180-degree turn, as the defense is what is keeping them afloat as the offense has fallen apart, with a drastic drop in 3-point shooting being a major culprit.
Myles Turner fits in excellently in Dallas. Turner will make sure the performance defensively was not a fluke. He is an elite rim protector, leading the NBA in blocks per game. It would be the third time in four seasons that he would do so.
Pairing him alongside Porzingis, who isn’t a great defender, would be smart. Offensively, he will help keep the floor spaced, as he is a capable 3-point shooter. If Dallas isn’t going to play Porzingis at the center spot, as he has admitted he prefers playing power forward, Turner is a great fit alongside him.

The package to acquire him isn’t overly steep. The Mavericks aren’t going to be able to afford both Dorian Finney-Smith and Jalen Brunson, so cashing in on him to land Turner makes sense. Josh Green doesn’t have a path to consistent minutes in Dallas and Dwight Powell will be replaced by Turner.
Trading a first-round pick when they owe their 2023 first-rounder to the New York Knicks hurts a little, but there likely wouldn’t be a player they would add with that pick that would impact the team winning games next season as much as Turner can.
