Why The Dallas Mavericks Need To Pursue Myles Turner

The Dallas Mavericks are on the cusp of becoming a team that can challenge in the Western Conference. Acquiring Myles Turner from the Indiana Pacers would help them achieve that goal.

Acquiring Turner also means that other teams in the Western Conference won’t, which could be as motivating as anything. Teams such as the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers could have Turner on their radar. The only way to keep them from landing him is to aggressively pursue him themselves.

The price is steep with two first-rounders, but Dallas’ package of players isn’t as intriguing as what other teams can offer. Even the Lakers, who are lacking assets, have a higher-upside option in Talen Horton-Tucker.

Adding Turner to the lineup would enable the Mavericks to continue using Kristaps Porzinigs at the center spot, which they seem like they would like to do and it is what Porzingis prefers doing. Pairing him with an elite defender in the frontcourt would be ideal for Dallas.

Offensively, Turner is a perfect fit for what the Mavericks want to do. He can help space the floor with his 3-point shooting, which will open things up for Luka Doncic to operate. Turner has also shown that he can do more than just stand around the 3-point line and is someone they may be able to rely on as a third or fourth option consistently.

The Mavericks would elevate their lineup on both ends of the court bringing Turner in, further raising their ceiling and improving their chances of advancing in the playoffs.
