Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?
Quite honestly, any trade in which the Mavericks are able to get rid of Kristaps Porzingis would be a win for them because he really is useless to them next to Luka Doncic. Originally, the plan of pairing him with Doncic sounded great, but Porzingis just does not look like the same player ever since his knee injuries.
He is less aggressive, he is very passive when he gets the ball inside and all Porzingis wants to do is shoot three-point shots, which devalues Luka Doncic in their offensive attack. While he is still a really solid big man, Kristaps Porzingis is not the right player for the Mavs, which is why they need to find a way to trade him.
Bringing in John Collins is a much better fit for the Mavs not only because of his presence on the interior, but because he is athletic enough to run the floor in transition with Luka Doncic, something Porzingis cannot do. Collins is also a very underrated defender and can hold his own against bigger, stronger guys in the low-post.
Moving on from Porzingis also gives Dallas freedom to pursue other big names in free agency over the next few seasons. Kristaps Porzingis is under contract through the 2023-24 season and for $101.5M, which is not ideal for the Mavericks.
They need to be able to have cap space not only to bring in more big name players, but to be able to sign Luka Doncic to a massive contract extension either this summer or next summer.

The Mavs really have nothing to lose by trading Porzingis, which is why doing so in a sign-and-trade with John Collins makes complete sense for them.
