Does this trade make sense for the Atlanta Hawks?
If John Collins wants to go elsewhere in free agency, this would be disastrous for the Atlanta Hawks, but they would have to find a way to execute a sign-and-trade to try and salvage some value. Getting draft picks from the Mavericks is decent value, but does not really help them immediately seeing as they were just in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Taking on Kristaps Porzingis and his contract does not seem that ideal either, but having him as a “consolation prize” to losing Collins is actually a pretty good deal for the Hawks. Porzingis averaged 20.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and shot 37.6% from three-point range this past season, which is why he could be a really solid option with Trae Young.
Atlanta needs another “star-like” player to pair with Young moving forward and maybe they could find something with Porzingis. He fits their system perfectly, being a stretch big man who can knock down numerous shots from the perimeter and Atlanta would not really need him in the paint offensively since they have Clint Capela.
With both Capela and Porzingis in the frontcourt, the Hawks would have two terrific rebounders on both ends of the court and be a really tough team to stop in terms of perimeter shooting as well. Their chemistry would be thrown off without John Collins in their rotations, but adding Kristaps Potzingis really is not as bad as it may sound at first for the Hawks.

If Collins wants to go to the Mavericks, then bringing in Kristaps Porzingis really is not that bad of an idea for the Atlanta Hawks. They get immediate production from him offensively and while they would be tied down financially, Atlanta would be able to build around two high-powered offensive talents for the foreseeable future.
This scenario is not ideal for the Atlanta Hawks, but if they lose John Collins, this may be the best scenario they are facing for future success.
