Kawhi Leonard’s Playoff Status Uncertain Due To Knee Inflammation

Kawhi Leonard, Clippers, NBA

Los Angeles Clippers superstar Kawhi Leonard is currently battling persistent inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee entering the NBA playoffs.

This condition has sidelined him for the last three weeks, casting uncertainty over his availability for the team’s playoff opener against the Dallas Mavericks. The fourth-seeded Clippers are set to host the fifth-seeded Mavericks this coming Sunday.

Lawrence Frank, the President of Basketball Operations for the Clippers, provided an update on Leonard’s condition. He noted that while Leonard has shown some progress, the inflammation must further reduce to allow him full mobility for basketball-related activities. “We’re hopeful he’s going to get there,” Frank said, conveying a sense of cautious optimism about Leonard’s recovery.

Leonard has been out of action since March 31, missing the final eight games of the regular season.

A recent report from The Athletic, citing unnamed league sources, revealed that Leonard had received an injection in his knee earlier this month to help alleviate the inflammation. However, Frank refrained from discussing specific treatments, focusing instead on the comprehensive medical care Leonard is receiving

Despite his physical limitations, Leonard has stayed involved with team activities. He has participated in film sessions and reviewed strategies concerning the Mavericks, though he has not engaged in any contact drills on the court.

This restriction was highlighted a day after Clippers coach Tyronn Lue expressed frustration over repeated questions about Leonard’s status, an incident for which he later apologized.

Leonard’s performance this season was among his healthiest in four years, playing in 68 games and averaging 23.7 points per game. His ability to elevate his play during critical moments is well-recognized. “This guy lives for these moments,” Frank emphasized, underscoring Leonard’s readiness to perform when it matters most.

Notably, the current inflammation is not related to Leonard’s previous knee issues, which have included a torn meniscus and a sprained knee in past playoff seasons. These injuries led to significant downtime, including missing the entire 2021-22 season due to a partial ACL tear.

As the playoffs approach, the focus remains on Leonard’s recovery and potential impact. Last January, Leonard signed a substantial contract extension with the Clippers worth $153 million over three years, highlighting his vital role on the team.
