NBA superstar Kyrie Irving, the seasoned guard for the Dallas Mavericks and a seasoned international competitor, has a notable history with Team USA, securing two gold medals — one at the 2014 FIBA World Cup and another at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Despite his previous successes, Irving will not be part of the 2024 Paris Olympics Team USA squad, even though he was initially among the 41 players considered.

Irving expressed his desire to participate this summer but recognizes the importance of concentrating on his NBA commitments.

“I would’ve loved to have joined, but I understand my role isn’t in this team’s plan,” Irving remarked. “The selection was tough, but I respect the USAB and my teammates immensely. At this stage, my primary goal is to lead the Mavericks to an NBA title, though I’ll certainly be cheering for Team USA come summer.”

Irving’s backing is directed at an impressive lineup featuring NBA stars like Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James under the stewardship of Grant Hill, the managing director since April 2021.

This selection follows the recent underperformance by Team USA at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, marking a significant shift from their longstanding success in international basketball.

Reflecting on the changes in team selection over the years, Irving shared, “Growing up, we had to actually try out for the team. It was about meeting as peers, gaining mutual respect, and truly competing. I miss those days of camaraderie and straightforward competition.”
