Derrick White Solidifies Himself As One Spurs’ Best Players

The San Antonio Spurs have been trying to figure out the future of their shooting guard position for years now and they have not had a lot of stability over the years. In 2017, the Spurs drafted Derrick White 29th overall and over the last two seasons, he has been getting better and better as an offensive player.

On the court for the Spurs last year, Derrick White averaged 11.3 points, 3.5 assists and shot 45.8% from the floor, 36.6% from three-point range. Since entering the league in 2017, White has seen his production with the Spurs increase every year and with Bryn Forbes no longer a member of the San Antonio Spurs organization, White could be the guy that steps up and solidifies himself as the team’s starting shooting guard from here on out.

Derrick White had some breakout performances in the NBA Bubble a few months back, where he averaged 18.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists while shooting 45.5% from the floor and 39.3% from three-point range in seven games. In the Spurs first seeding game versus the Kings, Derrick White scored a career high 26 points and began to prove his worth to the Spurs organization.

White is not only a combo-guard with a sweet stroke from beyond the arc, but can be a playmaker out on the court for a Spurs team who is searching for a young talent to put at the forefront of their organization’s plans moving forward.

With the contracts of DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge set to expire at the end of the 2020-21 NBA season, the Spurs will be looking to see who they can put their faith in moving forward and Derrick White seems like the obvious choice.

Expect to see Derrick White step into a much bigger role with the San Antonio Spurs this season and be the leading scorer amongst all the younger players on the roster. He could end up being their third best overall scoring option by the conclusion of the 2020-21 NBA season.
