Spurs Miss Playoffs For Second-Straight Season
It was very weird for there to be an NBA Playoffs without the San Antonio Spurs competing for another championship, but that will likely be the case again this season, something that has never happened before in the history of the San Antonio Spurs organization. Dating back to 1967 when the San Antonio Spurs organization was founded as the Dallas Chaparrals, this organization has never missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.
They are the only organization in NBA history to never fail to reach the playoffs in two consecutive seasons, which is an unbelievable achievement. This organization has been a dominant force in the NBA for over 50 years, which makes it very hard to say they will miss the playoffs again this year.
The only two reasons the Spurs will miss the playoffs for the second-consecutive season is because of how good the rest of the Western Conference is and because of the uncertainty with some of the key players on the Spurs roster. Out of the other teams in the West that failed to make the playoffs last year, the Grizzlies, Suns, Pelicans and Warriors all have a legit case to be made for making the playoffs this year.
Not to mention, DeMar DeRozan’s future is up-in-the-air right now and if the Spurs trade him away to rebuild for the future, there is no chance of them making the playoffs this year. LaMarcus Aldridge is also 35-years old now and the Spurs need to make a decision on his future with the organization moving forward as he is also in the final year of his contract.
The Spurs need to answer the tough decision of whether or not it is better to win now and not contend, or build for the future and contend for championships down the road, which ultimately, they will wind up choosing to build for the future, leading them to miss the playoffs for the second-consecutive season for the first time in franchise history.
