Coby White Takes A Big Step In His Young Career
Coby White did not miss a single game during his rookie season last year and was named to the 2019-20 NBA All-Rookie Second-Team after an impressive season. White averaged 13.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and shot 39.4% from the floor, 35.4% from three-point range. With the abilities to be an effective three-point shooter, Coby White has the potential to have a fantastic sophomore season.
The Chicago Bulls, outside of Zach LaVine do not have a reliable, second-scoring option, making the “second-best player” position available. Coby White is the only player that makes sense to step up and fill this role for the Bulls for a couple of reasons.
First, after the success Billy Donovan had with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in his second-year in the league, he will look to do the same with Coby White this year. Even with Dennis Schroder, Chris Paul and Danilo Gallinari on the roster, Billy Donovan heavily utilized Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as a combo-guard for OKC, using his three-point shooting abilities to expand the Thunder’s offense.
Given Coby White’s outside shooting abilities, Billy Donovan will move him around on the court and set him up for success at either point guard or shooting guard. His ability to be a primary ball-handler in pick-and-roll situations could also be something Donovan looks to use White for, as both Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. are two reliable options for White to drive to the rim off of.
Whatever Coby White’s role is with the Bulls this season, expect him to receive a lot of attention on offense and step up as the second-leading scorer on the team next to Zach LaVine. The Bulls have not had a reliable point guard since Derrick Rose and if anybody on this team is capable of stepping up to be the next “big thing,” it is Coby White.
