2020 NBA Draft
The Atlanta Hawks had the No. 6 overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft and had no intention of moving up or down in the draft. The Hawks front office was more than happy to end up with one of the top talents in the draft that could bolster their frontcourt with John Collins and Clint Capela.
They did just that by drafting big man Onyeka Okongwu from USC with the sixth pick in the draft. Okongwu joins Atlanta after one season in Southern California where he averaged 16.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and shot 61.6% from the field.
Not only is he a tremendous athlete and shot-blocker, but he is a very versatile big man who can play virtually anywhere on the court. He possesses very solid footwork for being only 19-years old and should be a guy the Hawks look to play alongside John Collins early on in his career.
The Hawks also possessed the 50th overall selection in the draft and decided to take Skylar Mays out of LSU. The 6’4” guard spent four years in Baton Rouge and is a proven leader. Although he was not a big scoring option until his senior season, Mays has always been known as a great 3-and-D player. His 39.4% from three-point range last season was amongst the top shooting percentages on LSU last year and his 1.8 steals per game led the team. Skylar Mays agreed to a two-way contract with the Hawks and should be a guy who the Hawks look to mold into a reliable back-up point guard behind Trae Young for the future.
