With the 2023-24 NBA regular season nearing an end, some franchises in the league have already begun preparations for the 2024 offseason. Several teams had their playoff hopes dashed weeks ago and have already turned their attention to figuring out how to upgrade their roster.

The first chance teams will have to do that is the 2024 NBA Draft. There is always a sense of optimism and hope around the draft as a franchise and their fan base have a chance to add a high-upside young player to the mix to help turn their fortunes around.

However, there is a lot of debate about just how helpful this year’s draft will be for franchises selecting near the top. In fact, this could be one of the weakest draft classes in recent memory, potentially ever.

According to basketball analyst Jeff Goodman, many veteran executives around the NBA are down on this year’s draft class. He went as far as to say that many of those executives believe that this is the worst draft class they have ever seen.

This draft class is certainly lacking name power, especially collegiately. In recent mock drafts, the top three players are all international prospects casual basketball and NBA fans have likely never heard of.

There are no generational talents in this year’s class as there were in 2023 when the San Antonio Spurs came away with Victor Wembanyama. An argument could be made that several players from last year’s draft, such as Brandon Miller and Scoot Henderson, would be the surefire No. 1 pick in this year’s draft class.

Judging a draft class before the NBA Lottery occurs and the order is official is premature. However, the early returns on evaluations, based on who Goodman has talked to, are not encouraging.

Multiple top picks could come from a Kentucky team who were upset by Oakland in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The NBA game is likely more conducive to those players than the college game was based on spacing, but it speaks volumes to the lack of name recognition this year’s draft class possesses.
