We’ll keep it simple to start. The Rockets do this deal because they need a point guard. Say what you will about Young. He is a point guard. He’s one of the best playmakers in the NBA. 

With the right supporting cast, Young has shown capable of leading a team on a deep playoff run. He could do the same with the Rockets as they share their identity to fit his skill set.

Meanwhile, the Rockets aren’t giving up tremendous defensive value to land him here. Sengun is similarly brilliant on offense and similarly limited on the defensive end. Some would argue that his defensive limitations are more concerning as a 5. 

Following this deal, the Rockets would likely target a defensive big. By pairing him and the rest of this young core with Young, they should be much improved in 2023-24.
