It doesn’t really matter whether Onkongwu is happy with his role or not. The Hawks are underutilizing him.
That’s just bad asset management. What’s the sense in having a young, starting-caliber big man on their bench? The Hawks could make this deal and find a more suitable replacement for Onkongwu.
They’d be landing Obi Toppin in the process. This is another player who’s been buried behind a veteran. Plenty of folks around the league believe Toppin could break out in a new environment.
Of course, he hasn’t flashed quite as much potential as Onkongwu.
