The Blazers do this deal if they’re not going to rebuild. 

It certainly doesn’t seem like they intend on doing so. Portland has developed a reputation for stubbornly committing to contending with Lillard. As long as they’re holding to their reputation, they might as well get him a co-star. 

Davis could be the perfect one. Their inside/outside dynamic on offense would put opposing defenses in quite a bind. This pair should compete for the NBA title. 

More broadly, fans have long wanted to see Lillard with an elite defender. This deal has him teaming up with one.
