Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
Any trade the Lakers could make should revolve around LeBron James. Whether that means it’s designed to benefit him or not is a different story.
It’s hard to call this deal. On the one hand, the Lakers are giving up the best player in the deal. A healthy Anthony Davis remains one of the best two-way big men in basketball.
On the other hand, Simons may be a more complimentary partner for James. He’s typically thrived alongside a dynamic scoring guard. Meanwhile, the Lakers replace some of Davis’ production by acquiring Nurkic here as well.
Still, even if this deal doesn’t make the Lakers better, it does prepare them for the future. They could even trade James and launch a wholesale rebuild following this deal.
