The LA Clippers aim to re-sign Paul George and James Harden in NBA free agency to have a formidable supporting cast around Kawhi Leonard in their new home, the Intuit Dome, next season.

Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations, expressed the team’s intent to retain both players but acknowledged their free agency status. George has a player option for next season, and Harden will be an unrestricted free agent.

“We’d like to bring back and retain Paul and James,” Frank said. “We’re hopeful we can, but also understand and respect their free agency.”

George is eligible for a four-year, $221 million extension, while Harden’s future with the team depends on his decision. The Clippers face challenges in upgrading their roster due to their likely status as a second-apron team.

Frank emphasized the importance of adding complementary pieces around their stars, given the age and injury history of Leonard, George, and Harden. Despite their injuries, the trio has shown promise when playing together.

The Clippers value George, who has played a crucial role in their success, including reaching the Western Conference finals in 2021. Frank hopes to continue conversations with George to reach a fair deal.

Frank acknowledged the team’s challenges in managing Leonard’s right knee, which has undergone surgeries and caused him to miss games. Despite this, the team remains optimistic about their chances next season.

“I understand the skepticism, but I would guard against cynicism,” Frank said. “Just because it’s happened doesn’t mean it’s always going to happen next year.”
