Westbrook’s decline may be an inevitable product of time. It’s also an unfortunate event for the Los Angeles Lakers. 

After all, when they acquired Westbrook, they surely thought they were getting a star-caliber player. Why else would they have chosen him over a different deal that would have netted them Buddy Hield? 

For what it’s worth, Hield was always the better fit. For a long time, teams have surrounded LeBron James with elite floor-spacers like Hield.

Pairing him with a non-shooting ball-handler like Westbrook was always a bold decision.

It may have been the wrong one. The Lakers’ 2021-22 season was a disaster, and 2022-23 isn’t going much better. By now, it’s obvious that this team needs to make changes.
