Jimmy Butler wants to finish his NBA career with the Miami Heat, but is also open to playing in Brazil’s top basketball league once his days in the Association are over.
In a recent interview, Butler, 34, told GQ he’d like to end his NBA career with the Heat but also expressed interest in playing for Flamengo in Brazil’s Novo Basquete Brasil. He cited his half-Brazilian heritage as a reason for his desire to play in the country.
Butler has one year left on his contract, followed by a 2025-26 player option worth $52.4 million or the possibility of becoming a free agent. He led the Heat to Eastern Conference titles in 2020 and 2023, but it’s unclear if the team shares his desire for a long-term commitment.

Heat team president Pat Riley said the team hasn’t seriously discussed an extension for Butler, although he ruled out trading him due to his contract situation. Butler reportedly seeks a two-year extension worth $113 million this summer.
Butler missed the team’s first-round playoff series despite averaging 20.8 points and 5.3 rebounds last season due to a sprained right MCL. Since joining the Heat in 2019, he has averaged 21.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.7 assists but has missed 100 regular-season games over five years due to injuries.

Butler’s future beyond next season is uncertain, but his desire to play in Brazil’s premier league is possible. He remains committed to the Heat for at least one more season.
