For some, this trade will have the Hawks looking like they’re chasing their tales. They just acquired Murray to fix their defense – why acquire a weak defensive big now? 

Well, to fix their offense. The issue with the Hawks’ backcourt is that neither is a strong off-ball player. With that in mind, why not acquire arguably the best off-ball big man in the NBA? Towns would dramatically improve this team’s spacing. 

More broadly, he’d be their second offensive option – and one of the most overqualified in the NBA. In fact, the Hawks would look like a super team following this deal.
