Why The Houston Rockets Do The Deal
Some Rockets fans will protest this proposal, and they’ll do so for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, some will say that the team has their starting big man of the future. Alperen Sengun has certainly flashed tremendous potential at this point in his career.
More broadly, some Rockets fans would suggest that patience is a virtue. Yes, the team is horrible now, but jeopardizing their chance at landing Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson would be worse than going 1-81.
The first point is easily countered. Davis prefers to play the 4, and Jabari Smith Jr. can easily be moved down to the 3. Acquiring Davis doesn’t need to have any impact on Sengun’s future with the organization.
The second point is a little more complicated. If the Rockets want to stay the course and maximize their lottery odds, that’s defensible.

On the other hand, they’ve got an opportunity to buy low on a star player here. If their lottery odds slip, that means Davis is paying off – and in all likelihood, they’ll still be picking in the top 10. What does this deal do for the Lakers?
