Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal 

Here’s the catch: the last thing the Spurs need right now is quality rotation players. 

Fans may not like it, but every NBA team does not enter every season with the intention to win. Tanking, whether we like it or not, exists. Given the summer they just had, it’s clear that the Spurs are about to prioritize lottery odds above all else. 

After all, the Spurs moved Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for three first-round picks and a swap this summer. Murray was, by far, their best player. It’s obvious that this organization is thinking about players that aren’t currently in the NBA. 

Players like, for example, Victor Wembenyama. If a team is going to tank, the 2023 draft is the class to tank for.

Granted, that means the Spurs will have competition in the race to the bottom. Following this deal, they’ll likely put themselves in the pole position.
