For the Celtics, this is about walking a line between the present and the future. 

Realistically, it’s not a deal they want to make. In all likelihood, they want to either keep Brown or flip him for a megastar. Ironically, if they keep trying to flip him for a megastar, they may depreciate his value. After all, a player who’s known to be unhappy makes for a distressed asset. 

If the Celtics find themselves desperate to move Brown, this is an interesting return. McCollum is not as generally an impactful player, but he could actually be a better fit alongside Tatum.

During Boston’s 2021-22 playoff run, they needed a player who was more reliable in handling the ball. McCollum qualifies. Moreover, his floor spacing will complement Tatum’s burgeoning playmaking abilities.

On the other hand, the Celtics land a couple of valuable first-round picks here as well. Perhaps they could use them, in time, as part of an offer for another star player. In that event, the Celtics could eventually use this trade to be a deeper, more balanced team.
