Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
In today’s NBA, first-round picks are the currency of choice. With that said, don’t underestimate the potential value of a second-round selection.
After all, last year’s MVP was selected in the second round. Nobody expected Nikola Jokic to develop as he did, but the Nuggets are certainly glad they took a flier on him. The same could be said for the Golden State Warriors and former Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green.
Of course, most second-rounders don’t end up in the company of those two. Statistically, a player picked in the second round is unlikely to have much of an NBA career at all. Still, the cost of drafting one is low – they’ll make a minimum rookie contract, and if they end up being a steal, you pay them after.
Moreover, the Spurs aren’t likely to get much more for Doug McDermott. He’s one of the league’s best floor spacers, but defensive limitations hold his value back. He’s not much of a shotmaker or playmaker, either – McDermott is a specialist.
