All NBA franchises are not created equal. For many fans and front offices, parity would be preferable. Unfortunately, it isn’t realistic. 

Plenty of factors determine a team’s success, but market size and managerial competency are two of the biggest. If you don’t play in one of the league’s glamor markets, you’d better run your team well. 

For example, look at the San Antonio Spurs. They don’t play in a big market, but they’ve never needed to. Throughout the 00s and into the 10s, they were the model of sustained excellence across the league. 

By contrast, the Sacramento Kings have not been able to accomplish as much. Their small market may be an obstacle, but it’s not an excuse for decades of poor management. After all, look at the Spurs.
