In all honesty, this deal is a little counterintuitive from the Knicks’ point of view.
After all, this team won 34 games in 2021-22. The Knicks didn’t even qualify for the play-in tournament. This team is rebuilding, right? Why would they surrender draft capital for a win-now player?
Well, we just told you. The Knicks play in New York. They don’t have to rebuild the way other teams rebuild. Of course, free agency isn’t the only means the Knicks have towards acquiring a star player, either.
The Knicks have plenty of ammunition to trade for one too. This puts them in a funny position – the Knicks have one of the best collections of draft capital in the league, but they don’t need to build through the draft.

With that in mind, they can afford to part with one non-lottery pick in exchange for a good player in an effort to make themselves a more attractive destination.
