Realistically, there are three pools through which teams acquire talent – trades, free agency and the draft. Of course, no team has complete control over any. With that said, some have more control over free agency than others. 

Specifically, we’re referring to big market teams. In theory, they’re supposed to be a more appealing destination to the league’s brightest stars. Having said that, the Knicks haven’t necessarily reaped the benefits of playing in New York. 

Perhaps they’ve had the wrong idea. Often, it feels as if the Knicks bank on their ability to draw free agents, strictly by virtue of playing in New York.

Obviously, it isn’t working. If the Knicks made a more conscious effort to stay competitive and put a quality program together, the free agents may come. 

Does this deal do enough to help them follow that path?
