Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal
Dear Bulls fan: we know you don’t like this trade. We understand, and we’re sorry.
At the same time, we think it’s justified. The Chicago Bulls, barring a miracle, are not going to win the 2022-23 championship. With that knowledge, they ought to make significant changes.
This deal has them doing just that. It also has them bringing in some quality role players. Clarke is a versatile, defensive-minded combo big. He’ll be able to support the defensively limited Nikola Vucevic, whether by subbing in for him or playing alongside him at the 4.
Meanwhile, Brooks is the type of 3-and-D wing every contending team needs. Granted, the Bulls won’t be contending following this deal either. Still, this trade gives them some wiggle room to open a 2 or 3-year retooling plan. With Zach LaVine still being just 27, that may be their best course of action.

If they can land him another co-star in that timeframe and retain Clarke and Brooks, they’ll have a better supporting cast around their stars. Otherwise, at least they’re clearing cap space a year earlier than expected.
