It wasn’t very long ago that the Sacramento Kings were among the bottom feeders in the NBA. They had the longest playoff drought in NBA history, a distinction that no franchise wants to hold. But, that came to an end last season, the first with Mike Brown as head coach.
Brown took over in the 2022-23 season and the Kings immediately turned things around. They went 48-33, which was their most victories in a season since the 2004-05 campaign. It snapped their 17-year playoff drought as Sacramento looked like one of the up-and-coming teams in the Western Conference.
Unfortunately for the Kings, they couldn’t start a playoff streak. They missed out on the 2024 NBA Playoffs after losing to the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA Play-In Tournament. Despite winning only two games fewer this season compared to last, Sacramento finished in ninth place after finishing in third during the 2022-23 campaign.
When the franchise tabbed Brown as their next head coach, the two sides agreed to a four-year contract. The fourth year is a mutual option, which would likely be exercised by both sides at this point given the success in the first two seasons.

However, Brown has other ideas. He is reportedly seeking an extension from the Kings and would like a hefty raise to come along with it. According to NBA writer Sam Amick, Brown is looking for a market-value deal and Kings owner Vivek Ranadive is reportedly willing to meet the demands.
The head coaching market in the NBA has boomed in recent seasons. Any prospective head coach can thank the Detroit Pistons and Monty Williams for that, as he signed a record-setting deal during the 2023 NBA offseason only to follow it up with the worst season in Pistons franchise history.
If he is making that much money, how much can someone such as Brown, who has gone 2-for-2 thus far in compiling winning seasons with the Kings, ask for? It will be an interesting negotiation to see unfold as Brown has put Sacramento back on the map in the NBA and wants to be compensated as such.
