Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal
On a surface level, this trade doesn’t clean the Warriors’ books as much as some fans may like. After all, they’re trading one expiring contract for another. Both Wiggins and Love are due for new deals after 2022-23.
On the other hand, the age gap between them changes the Warriors’ calculus. At 27, Wiggins will surely be chasing a substantial contract following 2022-23 – and if his play from last season is any indication, he’ll deserve one.
By contrast, at 34, Love won’t be due for the same earnings. The Warriors could likely retain him at an affordable rate. Alternatively, if his play in 2022-23 merits a bigger deal, they could simply let him walk. In that event, this deal would still justify itself, as the Warriors would have moved Wiggins for an unprotected first-round pick and two swaps.
Moreover, Love should make for a nice fit in this Warriors’ system. His floor-spacing and passing ability will look great in their motion-based attack.

The Warriors will suffer on defense following the loss of Wiggins, but with the league’s best defense in 2021-22, perhaps they can afford that loss: especially if Love improves their offense.
