In some ways, NBA players can be divided into two groups – those that make plays, and those that finish them. If you can’t do either, you’d better be one special defensive player. 

Both player types are important. Playmakers need lethal three-point shooters and lob-catching big men in order to, you know, make plays. Whether they’re score-first or pass-first, they either need targets or decoys in order to do what they do best. 

In other words, the relationship between playmakers and play finishers is symbiotic.

A team is well-advised to have a balance of both. Unfortunately, it seems as if nobody gave that advice to the Dallas Mavericks.
