In NBA draft terms, playmakers are generally valued more highly than play finishers. Ultimately, it might even be fair to say they’re more valuable players.
Just don’t make the mistake of thinking all playmakers are created equally.
For example, Markelle Fultz was selected first in his draft class. We don’t mean to be overly critical of Fultz. We think he’s a talented player – if he wasn’t, we wouldn’t suggest the Mavericks target him.
Still, it’s fair to conclude that the Philadelphia 76ers may have done better with an elite 3-and-D wing in retrospect.

On the other hand, two play finishers were selected ahead of Luka Doncic in his class in Deandre Ayton and Marvin Bagley III. The former is a good, starting-caliber big man, while the latter is still finding his footing in the league. Still, neither is in the same breath as Doncic.
Still, whether a reasonable first overall pick or not, Fultz can play. Is he worth the price of a first-round pick for the Mavericks?
