Indiana Pacers Receive: G Devonte’ Graham, F/C Larry Nance Jr., 2023 First-Round Pick (LAL via NOP)
New Orleans Pelicans Receive: C Myles Turner

We can already hear the question. It’s a reasonable one. Why are the New Orleans Pelicans giving up one first-one pick for Myles Turner when the Brooklyn Nets had to give up two?

Well, all first-round picks are not created equal. If the Lakers repeat their shameful 2021-22 performance next year, this is a lottery pick. The Pacers are gambling against their ability to make significant improvements here.

For that matter, they’re reducing their ability at the same time. After all, many observers expect the Lakers to land Turner, along with Buddy Hield from the Pacers this summer. Acquiring the rights to their upcoming pick while simultaneously cutting off, arguably, their best avenue towards improvement would be an ingenious move from the Pacers.

As for the Pelicans, Turner would be a great addition for them as well. Realistically, his low usage brand of basketball should jive with any team contending for the NBA championship.

If the New Orleans Pelicans landed him, they’d likely be doing exactly that in 2022-23. That should be worth any team’s first-round pick no matter where it may land.
