Tanking is a controversial strategy for a reason – for a number of reasons, actually.
Some will argue it throws the league’s competitive balance off. They’d prefer that all 30 teams were as competitive as they could be at all times in a given season.
Others will appeal for the benefit of the fans. To be sure, paying money and/or investing time in a team that’s aiming to lose, year in and year out is disheartening.
Of course, there are also the players to consider. Some may say they’re on board for a long-term plan, but halfway through it, they may realize they’re ready to win. Selling a player on a plan that won’t bear fruit for half a decade can be difficult.
