Why The Oklahoma City Thunder Do The Deal
The Thunder do this deal if they’re beginning to get antsy for wins. Put differently, if they think they already have the framework in place to compete, why should they continue to tank?
They just may be able to justify that feeling. As mentioned, Gilgeous-Alexander is already a star. Holmgren may not be ready to have that impact from day one, but if he even flashes the potential, the Thunder may be set for cornerstone players between that duo and Josh Giddey.
If so, they might as well get their guys accustomed to playing in a winning environment. Adding Myles Turner would be an interesting choice to make in a bid to achieve that end.
Some may see a redundancy between Turner and Holmgren. Others will see the potential to put Turner in drop coverage and maximize Holmgren as a weakside shot blocker. They can be staggered to keep a rim protector on the floor for most of the game as well.
