When an NBA player joins a team, it’s a marriage like any other. Nobody wants the outcome to be divorce, but everyone knows that statistically, it’s a possibility.
Julius Randle’s honeymoon with the New York Knicks did not portend that outcome. In fact, it did quite the opposite. His All-NBA selection and Most Improved Player award must have had both sides feeling quite secure in the relationship.
When the honeymoon ended, the other shoe dropped. Hard. Randle regressed heavily in 2021-22. The Knicks, fresh off of a surprise playoff appearance, did the same.
Randle’s frustration with himself and the team was visible at several points throughout the year.

Now, it’s widely accepted that the Knicks would at least entertain trading him. Of course, that’s not the only chatter around this team. They’re also heavily linked to star off-guard Donovan Mitchell.
