Trade Julius Randle To Charlotte Hornets

New York Knicks Receive: F Kelly Oubre, C Mason Plumlee, 2023 First-Round Pick (DEN via CHA)
Charlotte Hornets Receive: F Julius Randle

For all of the problems the New York Knicks may have with Julius Randle, they pale in comparison to the issues the Charlotte Hornets are facing this summer.

Before, their offseason outlook was fairly simple – retain Miles Bridges as a restricted free agent, trade some veterans, and move on. That was before Bridges’ unfortunate domestic assault charges.

It feels dirty to discuss that issue in the context of how it impacts an NBA team. Yet, it’s too relevant to ignore. If the Hornets are in the market for a Bridges replacement this summer, they may want to give the Knicks a call.

Randle isn’t a perfect facsimile of Bridges, but he’ll provide similar value. All told, he’s less athletic in transition and a better playmaker. Again, his three-point shooting will be the swing skill that determines whether this is a positive move for the Charlotte Hornets.

As for the Knicks, this deal makes particular sense if they do acquire Mitchell. Oubre Jr. and Plumlee will both be more complementary players for him than the ball-dominant Randle. With that said, after the 2021-22 season Randle had, getting a first-round pick for him is good value in any situation.
